Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s Divorce: What Happens With the Kids?
Previously a power couple, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are getting a divorce after almost seven years of marriage together. The split comes after a long history of controversy surrounding West, his words, and his mental health.
The social media star cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for her filing. West has always been known to make inflammatory statements, but it appears that his soon-to-be ex-wife has had enough of his erratic behavior. West has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a mental disorder that swings the person between mania and deep depression. Kardashian was supportive of West’s mental health struggles, but insiders say the rapper’s revelation that their oldest daughter, North West, was almost aborted deeply offended her mother.
When both parties have millions, if not billions, of assets, divorce can be messy. People say divorce is even more traumatic when children are involved. Divorces come with child custody battles and property division disputes, but the two celebrities apparently signed a prenuptial agreement regarding how their assets will be divided.
While Kardashian remains in the couple’s $60 million Hidden Hills mansion, West has toggled back and forth between L.A. and their ranch in Wyoming. Any divorce attorney in Los Angeles will tell you that property division inevitably affects the children since one parent usually takes the home.
Kardashian has hired a Los Angeles divorce lawyer, Laura Wasser, for the custody battle that is to come. Kardashian is seeking joint custody of the couple’s four children: North, age 7, Saint, age 5, Chicago, age 3, and Psalm, 21 months old.
Regarding the Hidden Hills mansion that the children call home, Kardashian wants the kids to stay there to maintain a sense of normalcy to minimize stress on the children. West allegedly agrees to put as little stress on the small children as possible.
It’s no secret that the Kardashian clan is extremely close, so the matriarch is inevitably involved. Kris Jenner spoke out recently about the dynamics surrounding the divorce.
“The good thing about our family is that we are there for each other and supportive and we love each other very, very much, so all I want is for those two kids to be happy,” Kris Jenner said. “And I want the kids to be happy. That’s the goal.”
A child custody lawyer in LA can examine the specific situation and figure out how joint custody can work in a way that alleviates stress for the children and both parents.
“I think we all want that for our families, just to be able to have … the love and appreciation of one another and just that everyone’s okay,” Jenner said.
